Belfius finances the construction of the most powerful “solar roof” in the world
12.6 hectares (equivalent to 20 football pitches)
48,040 solar panels, with a combined capacity of more than 18 MWp
12,000 tonnes of CO2 saved each year
Estimated production corresponding to the energy requirements of 4,500 households
Belfius has just finalised the financing of AG Heylen Energy, a joint venture between Heylen Warehouses, a Belgian company operating in logistics real estate, and AG Real Estate, for the implementation of several major projects in the field of renewable energy.
The framework financing granted by Belfius for a total amount of EUR 15.3 million over 15 years includes a tranche for the installation of no fewer than 48,040 solar panels on the roof of the Venlo E-Commerce Logistic Campus in Venlo, a city in the province of Limburg in the Netherlands.
Covering an area of 12.6 hectares, the equivalent of 20 football pitches, the solar energy installation will have a combined capacity of more than 18 MWp, making it the “most powerful solar roof in the world”.
Construction commenced at the beginning of 2020 and the facility is expected to be operational by June 2020. The estimated production will meet the energy needs of 4,500 households. In addition, it is expected to save 12,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with IZEN, one of the leading PV EPC contractors in Belgium and an important partner of Belfius in a number of fields. Another partner of Belfius, the engineering firm Encon, provided technical assistance on behalf of the bank.
This financing granted to AG Heylen Energy for the construction of the world's most powerful solar roof confirms the willingness and ability of Belfius to play a leading role in ecological transition by accompanying its clients, and in particular companies, in the implementation of their renewable energy projects in Belgium and abroad.
